The A177 is a rural dual carriageway road subject to a 70mph speed limit. The accident history in the area treated was of sufficient concern to warrant Accident Investigation and Prevention (AIP) intervention.

Over the 10 year period 1998 to 2007, there were 23 reported traffic accidents with casualties, on the southeast bound carriageway, split as shown into the following severity categories:

• 5 accidents involving fatal casualties
• 3 accidents involving serious injury casualties
• 15 accidents involving slight injury casualties
